plantica supervised the creative direction for the Christmas tree at Andaz Tokyo, embodying the brand’s concept of offering the “best experiences rooted in the local community.” The theme for the tree was the “Japan-ness Christmas Tree,” a reinterpretation of the traditional Christmas tree through a Japanese lens.

A Creative Approach Inspired by Japanese Culture
The design incorporated the Japanese aesthetic concept of mitate (reinterpretation), a traditional technique seen in haiku, rakugo, Japanese gardens, bonsai, and origami. This approach reimagines elements of Western culture through Japanese artistic expression.

The tree featured unique materials such as miniature bonsai and Edo glass-cut patterns, arranged in a way that transformed a traditional Christmas tree into a distinctly Japanese creation. The base, reminiscent of lacquerware, supported an array of bonsai plants, allowing visitors to appreciate both the overall composition and the individual beauty of each bonsai.
